The new St. Marys, Ohio Municipal Building, designed by B&N, marks a significant step forward in the town’s civic infrastructure. This facility serves as a central hub for municipal operations and community engagement, exemplifying a balance between historical character and contemporary innovation.
Strategic Design Solutions
Site integration was a key challenge, given the building’s prominent location at the intersection of the town’s civic, commercial and recreational axes. Positioned within a few hundred feet of the St. Marys River, public parks and sports facilities, our design team approached the site’s scale, context and topography with care to ensure harmony with the surrounding environment. The design divides the building’s volume into proportional components, allowing it to maintain urban coherence and complement the surrounding neighborhood.
The main entrance is accentuated with an elegant glass and steel canopy and is situated at a widened sidewalk which enhances the building’s street presence while providing a welcoming entry point for visitors and staff.
Functional and Flexible Spaces
Encompassing approximately 24,000 square feet across three stories and a basement parking level, the building accommodates a range of civic functions. One main goal of the project was to consolidate various user groups to a centralized facility which allows for better workflow efficiency and team engagement. Administrative offices, council chambers and community common areas provide efficient environments for public service and local governance. Additionally, a rentable floor offers adaptability for future tenants, supporting ongoing municipal growth and flexibility.
The three-story office is elevated above an open car garage, optimizing site usage and providing convenient parking solutions. This approach also addresses the complex topography, with elevation changes between an adjacent street and parking areas, ensuring seamless access for all users.
Long-Term Impact
As one of the largest developments in St. Marys, the municipal building sets a new standard for civic architecture in the region. By blending traditional elements with modern design, the facility provides lasting value for residents and stakeholders alike.
