The Grand River in Perry and Leroy Townships, Ohio, frequently flooded the existing bridge. In conjunction with the bridge replacement, the Lake County Engineer’s Office wanted to improve vehicular safety along Vrooman Road southbound to Interstate 90. B&N was hired to design a new roadway within the existing right-of-way but on an improved alignment.
The upgraded 0.85-mile corridor from State Route 84 to Interstate 90 included new pavement on a much safer alignment and geometry. The new vertical alignment improved sight distance and safety on this section of the rolling roadway. The horizontal alignment was slightly modified to soften sharp curves and allow for improvements to be constructed within a tight right of way to avoid impacts on residential properties.
The improvements were designed within the constraints of the corridor's Environmental Assessment. Replacement drive aprons accommodate the new roadway profile while maintaining the corridor's rural appearance. The drainage design perpetuated the existing patterns by utilizing roadway ditches, culverts, and closed systems while not increasing runoff directly onto the adjacent properties. Signage and pavement markings were upgraded and replaced for safety improvements.
