B&N performed two in-depth inspections of the US Grant Cable Stay Bridge spanning the Ohio River in Portsmouth. The bridge has a total length of 2,153 feet and a main span of 875 feet.
B&N engineers performed an arm’s length inspection which allowed them access to the entire structure. Rope access techniques were used to roll the stay cables on the bridge. Vibration testing was conducted on the eight longest cables, with tension pull testing on one cable. The pull testing was used to determine a correction factor on the in situ vibration tests.
The engineers performed a partial deck survey to gauge the wearing surface performance, and a deck profile survey was completed for all the main spans. At the conclusion of the inspections, a final report containing a condition narrative, repair recommendations, and plan sheets of bridge deficiencies was prepared for the client.
