The Fairfax County Park Authority (FCPA) initiated a pilot program to design rectangular synthetic turf fields at many county parks. This program was developed to meet increased public and political demand for extended use of the county’s athletic fields that host games and practices for multiple sports including soccer, football, lacrosse, and field hockey.

The FCPA chose B&N as the lead consultant for site civil engineering, surveying, geotechnical engineering, and construction-phase services for more than 35 athletic fields at various parks. Many of these projects were completed on a fast-track delivery schedule. To meet shortened delivery times, B&N coordinated closely with the contractor, review agencies, and the FCPA to expedite the process. The first two fields were completed within six months – a much shorter timeframe compared to previous turf field projects that took 10 to 12 months to complete.

B&N designed synthetic turf fields at multiple parks including:

  • Mason District Park
  • Wakefield Park
  • Poplar Tree Park (2 fields)
  • South Run Park (2 fields)
  • Lake Fairfax Park (2 fields)
  • Arrowhead Park
  • Franconia Park
  • E.C. Lawrence Park
  • Grist Mill Park
  • Rolling Valley West Park

B&N received Fairfax County’s 2008 Land Conservation Award in the Special Project Category for engineering design on the Franconia Park Synthetic Turf Field.
