The four-way stop at the KY 363/KY 1006 intersection was plagued with safety and capacity concerns. With many schools, a church and businesses nearby, traffic during peak hours was congested, causing significant delays. Over the course of 20 years, traffic volumes had increased by more than 100 percent on KY 363, and between 300 percent and 400 percent on KY 1006.
The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet (KYTC) selected B&N to analyze options for improvement, including a signalized intersection and a roundabout. A roundabout was selected as the preferred alternative.
B&N designed an alternating single-lane/two-lane roundabout to alleviate traffic congestion at the busy intersection. Construction phasing to reduce the impacts to existing traffic was a critical component of this project. In addition, close coordination with KYTC, the construction contractor and B&N helped keep the project schedule on track.
B&N’s scope of services included:
The project received the 2016 American Society of Highway Engineers (ASHE) Great Lakes Region Project of the Year Award and the 2016 ASHE Derby City Section Transportation Improvement Award.
