Through a task order contract, B&N is working with the Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) District 1 to meet the Florida Strategic Highway Safety Plan (SHSP) goals and the Vision Zero initiative: drive down fatal and serious injury crashes on all public roads. The tasks focus on the SHSP emphasis areas, including vulnerable users and pedestrian and bike safety, lane departures, speed management, intersection operations and safety improvements, nighttime crashes and wrong-way driving countermeasures.

To date, two tasks have been assigned under this contract. In these tasks, B&N studied two corridors to identify and prioritize holistic vehicle and pedestrian safety improvements. The B&N team collected data at each site, including traffic counts, observed pedestrian and driver behaviors and interactions, and drove the corridor with a GPS-enabled camera. The footage captured reduced the number of field personnel necessary because the footage could be replayed in-office to enhance project efficiency. Based on this data, B&N identified safety countermeasures and provided cost estimates for the proposed improvements.
