The design-build team of B&N and Turner Strategic Solutions was contracted to design and install electric vehicle (EV) charging stations at Naval Air Station (NAS) Oceana and Dam Neck Annex in Virginia Beach, Virginia. The goal was to provide charging capabilities for government-owned electric vehicles at nine buildings: Buildings 240, 310, 320, 513, 531, 820 and 830 at NAS Oceana, and Buildings 420 and 464 at Dam Neck Annex. Each building design included a Level 2, dual-port charging station to charge two vehicles simultaneously.
Civil site design included relocating existing parking spaces and converting them to EV spaces with new signage and charging pedestals.
Electrical design included extending the existing electrical systems to provide power for a new distribution panelboard at each facility to serve the new charging stations. The team evaluated and modified the existing as needed to support the new equipment. The new panelboards provide power to the charging stations.
The project included coordination with base personnel, following security protocols, and complying with all relevant building codes and Navy standards. All buildings remained operational during construction.
