The I-90 and I-77 system interchange through downtown Cleveland faces many traffic backups and raises safety concerns due to low-capacity allowance. B&N is completing design plans for a major reconstruction of the system interchange on I-90 to improve safety and increase capacity throughout the busy interchange system.
This project is a result of a B&N-led preliminary engineering study from 2000 that evaluated capacity and safety improvements along the entire I-90 corridor from SR 176 (Jennings Freeway) through East 55th Street. B&N identified an implementation strategy that broke the $2 billion corridor into manageable pieces.
The I-90 & I-77 interchange project was the third project identified in this study. The first two contracts identified, I-90 WB and I-90 EB over the Cuyahoga River, were constructed in the past six years. B&N led numerous stakeholder and public coordination meetings to identify solutions that met stakeholder goals in the area and minimized impacts in this highly populated area of Cleveland.
The I-90 corridor and surface streets is just one of two CCG3 contracts. As a sub-consultant, B&N is leading the roadway, bridge, and traffic control design and is developing detailed design plans and construction cost estimates for the I-90 mainline. Several ramps are being relocated along with mainline I-90 to facilitate a new flyover bridge to I-77. This $350 million project is scheduled to begin construction in 2025.
