A vital trucking route in Northern Arizona has been reconfigured to resolve issues of traffic backup/stoppage due to the outdated infrastructure in the area. This small bedroom community nine miles west of Flagstaff is a major ground transportation hub for the ports of California and an important part of the local economy.
Coconino County selected B&N to provide a planning study and engineering services for improvements to Shadow Mountain Drive and Hughes Avenue. For this project, B&N coordinated closely with the County to recommend improvements that enhanced access and safety in the area. Using B&N’s GIS and CAD capabilities, recommendations and implementations were visualized to assist in a better understanding of improvements which a roundabout, raised median, new access road for truck traffic, drainage improvements, paved shoulders and lighting.
As a direct result of these changes, the roundabout addition and truck stop reconfiguration has significantly reduced traffic congestion and stoppage for Bellemont Road and the surrounding communities. The modernization of this local hub has provided the County its’ first roundabout and added widened shoulders, pedestrian-conscious sidewalks, mailbox relocations to their communities and has transformed this rural road into a modern suburban corridor.
