Sawmill Parkway Extension Kicks Off in Delaware County
Construction of the Sawmill Parkway Extension in Delaware County, Ohio was kicked off yesterday afternoon with a groundbreaking ceremony. Once complete, the roadway extension will provide an important north-south traffic route connecting the City of Delaware with the northern Columbus metropolitan area.
The new roadway will open up approximately 1,600 acres for development near the city’s industrial park. According to Delaware County Commissioner Barb Lewis, “This is an extension that will bring great prosperity to our county.”
The $30.4 million Sawmill Parkway project includes approximately 4.5 miles of new roadway designed to manage traffic volumes that are projected with future development. Burgess & Niple (B&N) worked with the Delaware County Engineer’s Office to provide design, engineering and environmental services as well as corridor and alignment studies that helped determine the road’s placement.
The new four-lane divided road will include four roundabouts, a signalized intersection, a bike path along its entire length and intersection landscaping. The project is expected to be finished in late October 2016. B&N also designed an adjacent half-mile section of Sawmill Parkway that was completed and opened to traffic in 2009. This section also includes a roundabout which was the first to be built in Delaware County.
