Kentucky Roundabout Receives Transportation Improvement Award
A modern roundabout that improves safety, traffic flow and mobility near Western Kentucky University received a Transportation Improvement Award from the American Society of Highway Engineers (ASHE) Derby City Section during an awards luncheon held on May 21st in Louisville.
Designed by Burgess & Niple (B&N) for the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet (KYTC), the two-lane Bowling Green Roundabout replaces a signalized intersection that was causing traffic congestion and safety concerns. The continuous movement of traffic through the new roundabout has reduced delays. Safety was improved by decreasing the number of potential conflict points, reducing backups, and lowering speeds to calm traffic.
The award was presented to Greg Meredith, Chief District Engineer for KYTC, District 3. B&N project team members, including Project Manager Arrell Thompson, Deputy Project Manager Robert Milligan, Steve McDevitt and Ray Robison, Jr., also were in attendance.
