In the architecture, engineering and construction (AEC) world, data drives decisions—but numbers alone do not tell the full story. To truly make an impact, we need to pair data with the human side: lived experiences, community feedback and insights from stakeholders. Combining qualitative data with traditional metrics does not just add context—it creates a clearer, more meaningful and ultimately more effective narrative. This approach is especially important when tackling big challenges like equity in urban and regional planning, where understanding the human experience can make or break a project.
This session will explore how blending qualitative and quantitative data leads to smarter decision-making at every level, from statewide strategies to neighborhood-focused projects. By weaving community stories into the data, planners and decision-makers can uncover disparities, design more inclusive solutions and ensure that those solutions actually resonate with the people they are meant to help.
On top of that, this approach can save money. By understanding community needs early on, teams can avoid expensive redesigns, wasted resources and public backlash. Proactively addressing equity issues helps prioritize spending where it matters most, reduces long-term costs and delivers projects that work from the start.
We will share real-world examples, practical tools and lessons learned to show how this process is scalable, impactful and a game-changer for creating more equitable and effective infrastructure. By bridging the gap between numbers and narratives, we can shape a future where data truly serves the people it represents.
