In 2014, the 2,428-foot-long truss superstructure of the Milton Madison bridge made history when it was moved 55 feet from temporary bridge piers onto its permanent, rehabilitated piers, making it the longest bridge slide in North America. This presentation will detail the sliding process, the concepts used to maintain traffic and the temporary work needed to complete the project.

A key consideration when implementing practical design solutions is the impact to safety. Safety is also an important metric to consider when selecting a preferred alternative or prioritizing projects. This presentation will use real project examples to illustrate how safety analyses, specifically the quantitative methods in the Highway Safety Manual (HSM), were used to justify and implement practical design solutions, evaluate multiple alternatives and prioritize projects.
