Burgess & Niple is seeking a Mechanical Engineer (HVAC) in our Norfolk, VA office to be a part of our national team. 

B&N Mechanical Engineer Responsibilities:

  • Work with the Mechanical engineering team to execute and deliver engineering projects on-time, on budget, and to the performance expectations of our clients.
  • Coordinate with other discipline team members to deliver constructible projects.
  • Close coordination will be required with electrical, architectural, structural, and civil teams.
  • Design HVAC systems for diverse projects, including federal, state, municipal, and private sector facilities.
  • Perform building heat load calculations and schedule equipment to meet load requirements.
  • Perform water and air side pressure drop calculations to size piping and ductwork systems serving equipment.
  •  Prepare reports and narratives for use in developing projects and supplementing drawings and specifications.
  • Attend project kickoff and design review meetings to represent the mechanical team.
  • Perform construction administration duties primarily consisting of shop drawing review and RFI responses. 

Skills & Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering technology or equivalent from an ABET accredited program
  • 2+ years of experience and EIT designation.
  • Excellent written & verbal communication skills.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Proficient with AutoCAD and Revit to develop mechanical design drawings.
  • Proficient using Trace 700 to perform load calculations and life cycle cost analyses.
  • Experience and knowledge in the design of chiller/boiler plants, VRF systems, water-source heat pumps, heat recovery systems, air handling units, and DOAS systems.
  • Experience with design of DDC controls for major building systems.
  • Knowledge and experience with ASHRAE standards, IMC, IECC, UFCs, UFGS, and CPSM. Experience with DEB and other government agency review processes.
